Switchboard Upgrades - Safer, Modern Power

An old or overloaded switchboard is one of the most common - and most fixable - safety risks in a home or small business.

Power On Electrical & Air Conditioning QLD upgrades switchboards to modern standards: cleaner, safer, and ready for whatever you add next, from a new air con system to an EV charger.

Switchboard Tidy & Labelling

Open up an old switchboard and it's rarely obvious what half the circuits actually connect to - years of add-ons, no consistent labelling, and wiring that's been added to rather than planned.

A board tidy is exactly what it sounds like: we map out what each circuit actually powers, relabel everything clearly, and neaten up the wiring inside so the board makes sense at a glance. It sounds cosmetic, but it matters practically - if a circuit needs to be isolated in an emergency, or an electrician (us or anyone else) needs to work on your home later, a clearly labelled board saves time and reduces the risk of switching off the wrong thing.

It's also often the first thing we do before any other switchboard work, since it's hard to safely plan an upgrade around a board nobody can actually read.

Board Tidy & Labelling
switchboard protection

Modern Switchboard Protection

Older switchboards were often built to a much lower safety standard than what's required today - fuse-style boards with no safety switches at all aren't unusual in homes built last century, and even boards from a couple of decades ago may only have partial safety switch coverage.

A safety switch (also called an RCD) is what cuts power fast enough to prevent a serious electric shock if something goes wrong - without one covering a circuit, that protection simply isn't there. Upgrading to modern protection means full safety switch coverage across your circuits, circuit breakers instead of old rewireable fuses (safer, and no more standing there swapping fuse wire in the dark), and a board that meets current wiring standards rather than whatever standard applied when the house was built.

This is one of the most straightforward, highest-impact safety upgrades a home can have — the risk it's protecting against is real, and the fix isn't complicated.

Capacity for Switchboard Growth

Every switchboard has a limit on how much load it can safely handle, and that limit was set based on what the house needed when it was installed - long before anyone was thinking about ducted air conditioning, solar, or an EV charger drawing serious power overnight.

Adding any of these to a board that's already near its limit isn't just a compliance issue, it's a genuine safety risk - overloaded boards run hot, and that's how electrical fires start. Before we install or connect anything major, we check what your existing board can actually handle, and if it can't cope, we'll tell you honestly what an upgrade would involve rather than let you find out the hard way after the new system's already installed.

Planning switchboard capacity properly upfront is far cheaper and safer than working backwards from a board that's already overloaded.

Switchboard Surge Protection

A power surge - from a lightning strike nearby, the grid switching load, or even a fault elsewhere in the network - can travel through your wiring and damage anything plugged in at the time: TVs, computers, appliances with electronic control boards, security systems.

Surge protection installed at the switchboard covers your whole home in one go, rather than relying on individual power-board surge protectors at each device (which only protect what's plugged into them, and only up to a point). It's an optional add-on rather than a legal requirement, but worth considering if your home has a lot invested in electronics and appliances, or if you're in an area that gets regular storm activity - a modest upfront cost against the far larger cost of replacing several damaged appliances at once.
